Waxwing
Waxwings are spectacular looking crested birds with yellow
and red on the wing that are seen in some numbers in Ireland
most years. However this winter was an "irruption" year
meaning that there were many flocks of birds seen around
the country including one flock of over 100 birds seen
in the area of the harbour, soldiers point and environs
(January 2005). This was because of particularly cold
weather in Scandinavia from where the birds arrive. Waxwings
are about the size of starlings - they feed on pretty
much any kind of red berry, particularly rowan, and although
nervous, are usually fairly approachable. |
