Turnstone
Turnstones are so named because they often feed by turning
over small stones along the shore and picking at what
they fine under them, generally insects, crustaceans,
and molluscs. With their mottled appearance they are often
easy to miss, especially in rocks and seaweed; there are
often one or two hanging around the harbour, especially
at low tide. They breed in the far north but between migratory
stragglers and non-breeding early returnees, they can
be seen pretty much all year round in Ireland. |
