Light-bellied Brent Geese
"Almost the entire world population of Light-bellied Brent
Geese (perhaps 22,000 birds) migrate from the Canadian
Arctic, where they breed in the summer months, to Ireland
where they overwinter. In an epic journey that takes the
majority of birds over Greenland, stopping off in Iceland
to feed up, ultimately to Strangford Lough, where they
arrive in October in their thousands. After a few weeks
in Strangford Lough feeding on Eel Grass, they disperse
around Ireland. Several hundred birds frequent the Dundalk
bay area and may occasionally be seen around the harbour
feeding on acquatic vegitation, especially as the tide
rises. Note that they are usually seen in small family
groups of two parents and two to four juveniles. In March
they gather once again to return to the Canada and breed."
