Knot
Knots are legendary flyers. In Autumn they migrate south
from the arctic tundra where they breed, usually making
the trip in two or three heroic legs. Seeing a flock of
Knot twist and turn in the air, flashing their white underwing,
one imagines that they are guided by a single hand. In
fact slow motion photography shows that each bird follows
the bird just in front. During December, January and February
concentrations of birds peak with more thatn 10,000 birds
in the Dundalk Bay area, the highest concentration in
Ireland. At low tide they spread out over the mudflats
to feed on shellfish and worms but at high tide they crowed
together for protection from predtors such as the peregrin
falcon or sparrowhawk. |
