Goldeneye
Goldeneye is a diving duck that breeds in Scandinavia
and Siberia in the summer and over winters in more southerly
areas including this country. The male has a distinctive
black and white appearance while the female, pictured
above, is has a slightly more plain appearance, though
both feature the eponymous golden eye. It is striking
to see the courtship display in late winter and spring
whereby male bird tosses its head onto its back then stretches
its neck with bill pointing skyward and occasional splashing
of feet. Though shy, Goldeneye are regular visitors to
the harbour where they dive for underwater molluscs and
crustaceans. |
